Killeshandra gets the All Ireland Championships

Overseas anglers are welcome, that’s the message from the “All Ireland” individual championships – the major Irish one-day open event is taking place on Sunday July 31 on lake venues around Killeshandra, County Cavan.
“We want to invite all anglers across Europe to come and join us, take a break for this major contest and spend a few days practicing on waters such as Eonish Lake and Killykeen”, said organiser Eoin Scweppe.

Details of the Killeshandra Angling Festival have also been announced this week. It is a four-day event from Monday May 2 to Thursday May 5.
The individual winner will receive €1000 plus pools (based on 45 anglers or more) and the likeliest venues are Lower Derries, Eonish, Killykeen and an open draw on the last day.

Irish Hospitality Above and Beyond

Irish Hospitality is still here and was proven last week with American guests who were staying in our bed and breakfast accommodation. These guests were out sight-seeing and needed to visit a toilet. They presumed this facility would be provided at the church they were visiting ,but found it locked. On asking a lady they met at the church were the nearest place they could go to find a toilet, this lady insisted they follow her to her private home, some way from the church and allowed them use of her bathroom, then entertained them to tea and cakes. Our American ladies were so impressed at her hospitality towards them. Where else in the world would this happen?

Cheshire anglers Stuart Heath and Dave Williams got their Irish holiday off to a busy start with a combined haul of 92 kilos (203lb) on Cavan’s famous Lough Eonish.

In fact the delighted duo were staying at Eonish Lodge Guesthouse, Killeshandra, and fishing the BBs private shoreline.

The session started on Friday evening when the two men mixed enough brown crumb based groundbait to provide 60 balls, which they balled-in either side of the fence at the well known donkey hut.

Stuart was first up on Saturday morning and making his first cast around 5am and waited another 45 minutes before getting his first bite in the shape of a 5lb bream. David, prefers a more leisurely approach, meandered along at six o’clock and still managed to get 32 kilos (75lb).

Both men were fishing with open-ended groundbait feeders while baiting their hooks with a mix of worm, caster and red maggot mostly on size 14 hooks.

North Region Fisheries Board officer, Ted Sweeney, who kindly came along with his scales and weighed both catches and giving Stuart spot on 60 kilos (132lbs).

This is just the start of the holiday.

JEANCOLAS Dominique from France stayed at Eonish Lodge self catering last week with his three fishing friends and had a good week fishing on Lough Oughter.

1,462 lb caught at Killeshandra Coarse Angling Festival

The first annual Killeshandra Coarse Angling Festival sponsored by The Shamrock Innn, Killeshandra, has just been run from 3rd-6th May and a total of 663.45 kilo ( 1,462 lb) of fish was caught by 21 anglers.

Anglers consisted of a number of local anglers, also some from Northern Ireland and the UK. The overall festival was won by Preston Innovations rep. Tony Price from Cootehill who caught a total of 47.95 kilo this after blanking on the first day. He was in eighth place going into the last day but after catching the best bag on the final day of 20.90 kilo was propelled into first place to win first prize of 600 euro plus a further 120 euro for the biggest catch of the day.

Second place went to John Potters with a total of 46.56 k, third was Francis McGoldrick of the Anglers Rest in Ballyconnell with 45.94, 4th was Simon Houthwaite of Enniskillen with 43.90 k and 5th was former England international Dickie Carr with a total of 43.81 k. Bags consisted of mainly roach and hybrids with a few large bream coming from Killykeen match stretch and the odd tench.

The lakes fished were Lower Derries, Killykeen and Tawlaght. The first 3 days were on a rotation basis and on the final day it was an open match. Tawlaght fished very badly as the fish were away spawning and it was decided to take Tawlaght out of the last days fishing and replace it with another section on Killykeen. Lower Derries was the best venue producing consistently good bags of fish for all anglers, Killykeen got better day by day.

The Festival was a resounding success and after these catches should be a must for all anglers in the future.
